Does Reddit remove photo metadata?
Reddit says it strips location and personal-information metadata from shared media. Understand that scope, linked originals and what to check before posting.
Reddit says it strips location and personal-information metadata from shared images and videos. That does not establish that every possible field, externally hosted original or other source of identifying information has disappeared.
Yes, for the location and personal-information metadata Reddit describes
Reddit’s official privacy page says it removes location and personal-information metadata from images and videos people share. That is a stronger basis for an answer than an undated forum comment or a test of a single downloaded picture.
Keep the conclusion within that wording. The page does not provide a field-by-field list covering every image format or say that every kind of metadata is removed. It also does not, by itself, explain the complete retention history of an uploaded original. This article describes Reddit’s documented position, not an independent audit of every upload and download path.
File metadata and public post information are different
A photo’s embedded capture location is different from its Reddit post, title, author account and comments. Reddit’s Public Content Policy says public posts, usernames, profiles and related information can be seen by internet users. Removing an image field does not remove the context in which the picture was posted.
Review the visible image too. A street sign, client name, document on a desk or reflection can reveal something that no EXIF cleaner can erase. Decide whether that content belongs in the post before uploading it.
| Information | Where it appears | Relevant review |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded GPS or device fields | Inside the media file | Inspect the copy you intend to share. |
| A visible address or face | In the picture itself | Review the image, framing and permission to publish. |
| A revealing title or username | Around the media on Reddit | Review the complete post and account context. |
A link to an outside image needs its own check
Reddit supports links as well as image posts, subject to the community’s allowed post types. If a post sends readers to a file on another website, Reddit’s statement about its media handling is not a guarantee about that outside host’s downloadable original.
Check the destination that a reader can actually open. A preview displayed in a Reddit post and an original offered by the linked site are different files to assess. For a client handoff, name which copy is approved and avoid linking an unreviewed source folder alongside a cleaned preview.

Review location information before the file leaves your device
If a capture location should not leave your control, inspect the source before uploading it anywhere. On iPhone or iPad, Apple documents opening a photo in Photos and swiping up or tapping Info to review its location information. Its guide also explains removing an existing location and controlling location when sharing.
Use a separate delivery copy when you need to retain the original for your own records. Decide which fields matter to this handoff, remove the supported fields you do not want to share, and inspect the resulting copy. A missing map in one viewer is evidence about that viewer’s display, not proof that every possible field is absent.
Our existing metadata handoff guide covers the cleanup procedure. The Reddit-specific decision is when to do it: before upload if you do not want to rely only on downstream handling, and before supplying any alternative download link.

What your own download check can establish
When checking an already-authorised post, inspect the downloaded media rather than a screenshot of it. Record the upload method, exact download path, date, file type and fields you checked. If you need a fresh test, use an image you may publish that contains no sensitive information; do not expose a private location to see whether it disappears.
A clean result supports a limited observation about that file and path at that time. It does not establish what every app version, linked host or future upload will do. Keep the check in your handoff record and repeat it when the delivery path materially changes.
Does a cleaned photo make the post anonymous?
No. Reddit separately documents using an IP address to infer a general city, region or country. Removing GPS from a photograph does not change that account or network information, or the public context discussed above. File cleanup addresses a narrower task.
Spoofzy’s Metadata Cleaner removes supported hidden fields from supported images and videos, with separate standard image GPS, device and date choices. It does not make a Reddit account anonymous or guarantee total privacy. For multiple destinations, prepare and review the delivery copy once, then assess each platform’s actual upload or link path.
